Directions to The Fishermans Nook

The Isle of Cumbrae is reached by a 15 minute Caledonian-Macbrayne ferry ride from Largs. It takes foot passengers, cars and bicycles. In high season the ferries run at quarter to and quarter past the hour. No booking necessary unless you are going to be late on a Friday and you can book a late ferry. Last ferry is usually around 8pm. To find the ferry follow the Cumbrae ferry signs in Largs. They will take you to a small road running alongside the sea. Just park the car on the side of the road anywhere, and buy your ticket from the small sales ticket office by the ferry where there is also a public toilet. You pay for your car and then an additional fee for every passenger in it. A multi-joumey journey ticket is better value if you intend to come back and forward from the island. Alternatively, you could leave your car in Largs and go over as a foot passenger, or you could take your car on the first trip over but then leave your car on the island and just come back over as a foot passenger to the mainland. (The Cumbrae island car park by the ferry is free). Sometimes the ferry crossing in winter is disrupted. High winds and fog make it difficult for the ferry and I would suggest that you contact the Largs Pier Ferry Office 01475 674134 or text “CALMAC 07” to the number 60030 for an update.

PETROL – There isn’t a petrol station on the island but there is one in Largs.

TRAIN– By train, an hourly service runs from Glasgow Central station to Largs, and takes under an hour. The train station and the ferry are very close to each other. www.nationalrail.co.uk

FLIGHTS – Cheap Ryanair flights come into Prestwick Airport in Ayrshire. There is a train link from the airport to Largs. 55 minutes. Easyjet, British Airways, Flybe and British Midlands are just some of the flights that come into Glasgow Airport . There is a bus link to Paisley Gilmour Street Station and from there a train link to Largs.

The bus will terminate at the small harbour and the George hotel. Opposite the bus stop is a small “no entry” road. Fishermans Nook is at the end of this road overlooking the sea. A communal front door leads to Fishermans Nook on the right of the hallway.
